. Which should I select as the Primary Domain on the screen once the payment has gone through for the redirect.-- The WP domain or my new domain>

Thank You

Hello - great and useful post since I am currently working on moving two wordpress.com blogs to their own domain. I just did the export/ import on one of them and all went well -- but the LINKS did not transfer.

How can I move my links over without retyping everyone of them over again please?

Hope there is a way.

Thank You

Issmat:

Thank you so much for taking the time to respond to my questions. So many times, it seems like questions like this end up in cyberspace never to be heard of again.

I'm thinking of adding referral page to the small business portion of my blog (and business website if it ever gets built) . . . I'll happily add your name/site . . . with your permission, of course.

Hi Alexis,

After the Brutus, and if you followed all steps correctly, all traffic from your old wordpress.com blog will be redirected to your new blog automatically. For sometime, Google search hits will still show your blog posts with the old blog address (http://blogname.wordpress.com), but when someone clicks on them they will be taken to your new blog.

After a while, the search engines will update the web addresses and you will start to see the search hits having the new blog address instead of the old one. Still, if you have links to your old blog placed on other sites, they will continue to redirect to your new blog as long as you maintain the $10 annual redirect fee with wordpress.com (step 2 in the guide above).

You will almost certainly have less traffic in your new blog than you did in your old blog. In time, your new blog traffic will build back up as search engine bots crawl and reference your blog, and as long as you take the time to implement all the SEO measures in your blog that were previously automatically provided by wordpress.com.

There are several plugins available for wordpress.org blogs that help with SEO. Take some time and browse the plugins directory now that you have the ability to install whatever you want on your blog. Read reviews about the best ones, add google analytics to track your stats, and carry on with all the regular conventions of using blog titles with good keywords, tagging, etc.

I hope that helps. All the best with your new blog site. You won't regret it, even if your traffic drops a little!

Cheers,

Issmat

This was very helpful. Thanks.

Question: What happens when someone searches and looks for one of my past posts on the WP.com blog? I continue to get lots of traffic on past articles, so I've been hesitant to take the final step and pull the Brutus.

Will a person get a 404 error after the arrows redirect to the new domain even though past posts were moved in the database?

Now i have both domain.com and domain.org showing the wp blog at zhe same hosting, what you think will happen if i change on domain.org at wp-admin>settings>general domain.org to domain.com ?

Is this a trick?

I wish that existing post, pics etc... stay the same but with different domain prefix - domain.com

Hi March,

To use domain.com instead of domain.org for your blog:

1. Make sure the name servers of domain.com are pointing to the nameservers of the hosting company where your blog is hosted. If you acquired your domain name from the same company that is hosting your blog, you probably don't need to change the nameservers.

2. Once domain.com has the correct nameservers of your web host, go to the management page of your domain and look for the place where you can specify the directory where your blog files are sitting. Insert the correct path to the directory and your domain.com will now be connected to your blog.

I hope that helps!
