An amazing new touchscreen platform! Yet, do take the ‘we did it first’ MS hype with a grain of salt. I saw similar touch-screen technology from a French-Japanese company in Japan in 2006, though the ‘Surface‘ comes with some impressive applications of its own.
A ’behind the scenes’ look at Microsoft Surface was presented in July 2007 by the folks at popularmechanics.com.

Amazing. That’s what I thought when I first witnessed the potential of Surface. No other Microsoft technology is as forward thinking and sexy. If you ever get the chance of getting your hands on Surface I highly recommend that you don’t pass it up. It will make you smile!

I finally got to play around with one of these in person. I was impressed by how accurately it detected input from multiple users.
While a large number of the apps are only for technology demonstration purposes, it is easy to see how this could indeed become a ubiquitous appliance in many commercial settings.
Here are some videos from units on display at MIX 08 including a Snow Board Customization App.

This sure has come a long way from their sample unit in Redmond. Only thing left is a good/quick way of capturing user input (text).
